While on Leave

Information and guidance to help you stay informed, supported, and connected during your medical leave from Brown.

Students on medical leave often ask how they can stay connected with the Brown community and what resources remain accessible during their time away. While the goal of a medical leave is to provide space to focus on health and well-being, we understand the importance of maintaining a sense of connection with your Brown community.

Deans in Student Support Services reach out once each semester to check in and offer support. Below are responses to some of the most frequently asked questions about access to campus resources, participation in campus life, and academic planning while on leave.

Email Access

You will retain your Brown email for one year after your leave begins. After that, it will convert to a Lifetime Account. You can extend your student email access by contacting:

Campus Building Access

Students on leave do not retain card-swipe access to:

  • Dining facilities
  • Residence halls
  • Other Brown-owned buildings that require swipe entry

Participating in Campus Activities and Organizations

Students on leave may attend public campus events or meetings that would normally be open to the public or as a guest of a Brown student, unless being on campus poses a threat to their safety or the safety of others.

Students on leave may not hold a student leadership position (such as president of a student group) on campus during the time of their leave, and may not reserve campus space. Students on leave will be notified by a dean if any additional restrictions apply to their participation in campus life.

On-Campus Employment

Students on leave may apply for jobs open to the public, but are not eligible for roles classified as "student employment," which are limited to enrolled students.

Athletics & Fitness Center Access

Students on leave do not retain automatic access to athletic facilities. However, they may purchase a pass under the Alumni Membership policy. Visit the Brown University Recreation website for current eligibility and pricing.

Library Access

Library access ends when your leave becomes effective. In certain cases—such as graduate students completing work required for return—access may be granted. Requests should be coordinated through your department or Student Support Services.

Taking Courses Elsewhere

Students wishing to take coursework at another institution while on leave should review information on transfer credit policies and contact the College to ensure eligibility. Detailed information can be found on the College’s website.
