Taking a Leave

Supportive guidance to help you consider whether medical leave is the right step for your well-being and academic journey.

We understand that deciding to take a medical leave can be difficult. Our goal is to make the process as straightforward as possible and to affirm that prioritizing your health and well-being is a responsible and valued choice.

Getting Started

Students begin the medical leave process by meeting with a dean in Student Support Services. During this conversation, we’ll discuss the reasons behind your decision—whether related to mental health, physical health, substance use, or a combination—and answer any questions you may have.

You’re encouraged to speak with your support network (family, care providers, advisors, etc.) before finalizing your decision. Once you decide that a medical leave is the right option, your dean will help you complete a brief form to initiate the leave.

Connecting to Support

Depending on your situation, we may connect you with campus resources such as Student Health Services or Counseling and Psychological Services for consultation, treatment planning, or referrals for care while away. For some students with existing support systems, these conversations may be brief; for others, they can be helpful in shaping a plan for self-care during the leave.

What Happens Next

Once your leave is approved, Student Support Services will notify relevant campus offices (e.g., Residential Life, the Registrar’s Office), and you’ll receive an official letter outlining your medical leave status and the clearance-to-return guidelines. A simple notification will also be sent to your parent or guardian, notifying them that you will be on medical leave. If you need help planning your departure from campus, your dean can offer additional support.

Additional Considerations

Medical leave is designed to give you time to focus on your well-being so you can return ready to succeed both academically and personally. It also offers protections and benefits, including:

  • Transcript protection: Courses from the semester are removed, and the transcript simply reflects a “Leave of Absence.”
  • Academic reset: Academic standing is reset upon return.
  • Financial aid continuity: Aided students remain eligible for a ninth semester of aid, if needed as a result of leavetaking.

At the time of leavetaking, students may also wish to consider the following financial and logistical details:
