Medical Leave of Absence

Understand the process, purpose, and support available before, during, and after a medical leave.

At Student Support Services, we recognize that every student’s path is unique. We offer a supportive space to help you think through your options—medical leave being one of them—as you develop a plan that aligns with your well-being and long-term success at Brown.

Students take medical leave for a variety of reasons, often related to physical health, mental health, or substance use concerns that are impacting their ability to fully engage in academic and campus life. While the decision to take a leave can be difficult, many students later reflect that it was a meaningful and beneficial step for them.

Why Take a Medical Leave?

A medical leave provides students the opportunity to step away from the demands of the University to focus on their health and well-being. During this time, students are encouraged to seek the care they need to build the foundation for a successful and sustainable return to Brown.

Guidelines and Support

Brown has thoughtful guidelines in place to help students get the support they need while away to achieve the level of sustained stability needed to support a successful return. The clearance process is designed to honor each student’s individual circumstances and prioritize their readiness to re-engage with academic and campus life.

Upon return, students are supported in accessing resources and making connections that promote continued stability and success.
