What to Expect When Meeting with a Dean

Our goal is to provide a supportive and collaborative space where you feel heard, understood, and empowered to take the next steps. Here’s what you can expect when meeting with a member of the Student Support Services team.

Step 1: Preparing for Your First Appointment

  • Before your meeting, take a moment to consider: If working with a dean goes well, what might change for you? Your goals can help shape the direction of your support plan.
  • Plan to Arrive on Time: Arriving on time (or a few minutes early) ensures you’ll have the full time to talk with your dean. We understand that unexpected things happen, so if you need to cancel or reschedule, please let us know as soon as possible so we can find an alternative time that works for you.

Step 2: During Your Appointment

  • Share What You’re Comfortable Sharing: The more context you can provide, the better we can understand your experience and identify appropriate resources and strategies. You’re in control of what you share, and we’re here to listen with care and without judgment.
  • Co-Create a Care Plan: You and your dean will work together to develop a care plan that reflects your goals, priorities, and needs. This might include action steps, referrals, or follow-up conversations.

Step 3: After Your Appointment

  • Take Next Steps at Your Own Pace: Your care plan may include suggested tasks or follow-up items. If anything feels overwhelming or unclear, let your dean know. We want your plan to be realistic and manageable, and we’re happy to revise it together.
  • Stay in Touch: Continued communication with your dean helps ensure the support remains relevant and practical. Whether things are going well or new challenges arise, we’re here to adjust your plan and walk alongside you.

Our approach is collaborative, compassionate, and centered around your success and well-being. You don’t have to have everything figured out, showing up is a meaningful first step.
